As we move into yet another exciting new year ahead, we are faced with that age-old question: “What are the hot trends coming down the pipeline now?!”.
January is that special time of year when we hit the reset button and start looking forward to all the new and exciting things that are about to hit the market, and replace the things that we have grown tired of or bored with. Everyone likes a little update, and now is the perfect time to do just that.
Winter in Canada does have its benefits, and my aversion to the cold means I get to spend A LOT of time indoors looking for inspiration and ideas on the World Wide Web. Having done a little research on this topic (or a lot, actually…), here are some of the highlights of what to expect for this bright new year ahead:
Floral Fabrics and Wallpapers
Gone are the days of twee little floral patterns repeated over and over again in multiple shades of dusty rose. The new floral is big and bold and packs a punch. Available in bright colours, graphic patterns, and interesting styles, this floral will in no way scar you like your mother's house did in the late 80’s.
Rich Jewel Tones
As designers we definitely do love our neutrals, and in recent years we’ve moved from beige to gray to replace all the major pieces in our lives. However, both colours are the perfect backdrops for a punch of colour, and if you’re going to do it, go all the way. Rich emerald looks fantastic paired with light grey, and Bright Sapphire is the perfect way to liven up a beige or camel. But don’t mess around, go big or go home!
Experiencing (in my opinion) a delayed renaissance, acrylic or Lucite is shining brighter than ever. Conjuring memories of the Mod 60’s, this clear delight is showing up in everything from furniture to accessories, jewellery and more. It’s fresh, airy, and works well in a mix of styles so inject some lightness into your life with this stylish material.
It was bound to happen. We went from all gold metals to all silver metals and now we are FINALLY saying, by all means, mix them all up!! Gone are the days of staying exclusively in one metal finish. The difference now is that the finishes are not always as polished or glossy, and softer living finishes that age and morph over time are key. And remember, a little goes a long way to create the perfect balance and tension!
Having been bombarded with darker wood tones for well over a decade, lighter woods are coming back with a vengeance. Floors are getting lighter, furniture is getting cleaner, and the key to it all is removing the yellow and orange undertones that were so prevalent in decades prior. Clear coating and satin finishes let the natural wood shine.
THIS WAS JUST A TEASER OF TRENDS TO COME!
